Allan Pinkerton and his sons, William and Robert, were true innovators in the field of criminal science. They had developed the idea of the mug shot and by the 1870 they had the largest collection of criminal mug shots in the world. Robert, the administrator of the bunch, developed a criminal card system that became the model for law enforcement agencies and investigation groups today, including the F.B.I. The Pinkertons were key in removing the element of organized crime from the Horse Racing industry of the late 1800s. In 1930, Robert II (Allans Great-Grandson) took charge of the company and moved into the realm of security. Today the Pinkertons are in charge of protecting the rights, property, and finances of several Fortune 500 companies.
