This incredible hand-woven traditional rug is made entirely fromgenuine wool. All of the wool for this Storm rug has been hand-carded,spun and woven by Navajo rug weaver Louise Johnson. The red dye is madefrom natural material indigenous to the reservation and the differentshades of gray and white come from different shades of sheep. Louise isso old she was born before they officially recorded the birth-date whenregistering Native Americans. Because of this, she is not even sure howold she is, though she guesses between 85 and 90. Unfortunately, Louisewill not be making many more rugs and we were lucky to get this one.This gorgeous genuine Navajo rug is 40" by 33-1/2", about 3 feet, 4inches by 2-1/2 feet.

According to Navajo (Dine') legend, it was the deityknown as Spider Woman who taught a young Dine' shepherdess who wasshivering from the cold the art of weaving upon a loom. After teachingher to sheer sheep, card, and spin wool Spider Woman told her: "Myhusband, Spider Man, constructed the weaving loom making the crosspoles of sky and earth cords to support the structure; the warp sticksof sun rays, lengthwise to cross the woof; the heralds of rock crystaland sheet lightning to maintain original condition of fibers. For thebatten, he chose a sun halo to seal joints, and for the comb he chose awhite shell to clean strands in a combing manner." Spider Woman thenwarns the newly named Weaving Woman to "walk the Middle Way," keepingher life in balance and not to do too much of one thing. Good advicefor someone taking on the challenge of weaving a large rug. SinceWeaving Woman, the Dine' have always been accomplished weavers throughthe generations, hoping to pay proper homage to the Spider Woman andher husband.
